Powhatan
Virginia's Fourth Fastest Growing
Powhatan is an ever changing county. Located close to Richmond, Powhatan is Virginia's fourth fastest growing county. As a community of large lots for residential homes, Powhatan offers families space and peacefulness from the busy way of Richmond.
Location
Powhatan County lies in Virginia's Piedmont, between the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Tidewater. It was formed in 1777 from Cumberland and Chesterfield counties. In selecting the name back then, legislators resolved to keep any suggestion of allegiance to England or to the Royal Family. Instead, they chose the name of Powhatan, after the Indian Chief, the fierce warrior who had fought the English incursions into his Powhatan Confederacy more than a century earlier. Powhatan is located south of the James River just west of Chesterfield County. To the west of Powhatan is Cumberland County, and on the south is Amelia County. Central to Richmond along the James River, Powhatan is convenient to a variety of activities.
Roads
The new purposed Route 288 is scheduled to cross the eastern corner of Powhatan, connecting the county to the north side of the James River. Route 60 is the main route through the center of the county, with Route 711, Huguenot Trail, following the James River West. At the west end of Route 711 is Route 522, which is the county's major north/south route. There are many other scenic roads throughout Powhatan County.
